A Message From The Artist:

LIZA DONNELLY

As women, we struggle with our bodies. We are often defined by our bodies. As far as our culture and other cultures are concerned, we are our bodies!  As a cartoonist, I deal in bodies. I often draw a lot of women in my work—I make a point of it– because I try to create humor that opens people’s eyes and speaks to women’s issues, feminism, sexism, racism, equality.

When I was invited to draw portraits of this year’s WIE Award winners,  I immediately said yes, I was honored to be asked. So I spent a good week studying this years’ awards recipients’ photos, trying to understand them visually, getting to know them through their bodies and faces. Who are these women? They are amazing, inspiring people. I tried to convey their spirit and passion with a few lines. Not easy, particularly since I am not a trained caricaturist. But I love doing this kind of thing if the people I am to draw are people I can respect and like. It was a pleasure.

When I was young, along with cartoons, I used to draw a lot of animals from photographs. I believed that I was connecting with the soul of the animal by drawing them.  While I a little more realistic now, I do believe that by drawing these wonderful women, I somehow connected to them, and feel enriched by my work with their visages. These women are not identified by their bodies, but by their work and their ideas. I will keep drawing all of you in my work, and all of your bodies, but more importantly, all of what you do.
